Every site has a history and should be seen in the context of its physical and social role. There are various contemporary responses to that historical context:

The, “mimic what is there” approach, which can reduce the clarity of the original and smudges what is distinctive.

The, “be different” approach, highlighting competing qualities, contrasting old and new.

The engaging approach where the history of a building or site becomes a source of ideas and inspiration for variations of both its formal and metaphorical themes. This is where our studio operates, connecting the past with the future, and helping to manage its evolution.

Some of our project responses can be seen at The McManus, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Glasgow Cathedral Precinct and Eden Court Theatre.
