How does heritage impact our wellbeing?

This morning we discussed the relationship between heritage and wellbeing. The discussion was framed around the impact of heritage on our wellbeing and how through architectural interventions we can improve the ‘wellbeing’ of heritage buildings.

Many of the 19th century buildings we work with have generous ceiling heights and large windows bringing in plenty of light, giving occupants space to breathe. This inherent generosity of space is what makes the buildings adaptable to new uses but also perhaps at the root of why we feel good in these spaces and why people want to conserve them.

Conservation is no longer exclusive to protecting and preserving the best of our built heritage and listed buildings; but appreciates all buildings as a resource to re-imagine and alter to find new life. This sustainable approach to conservation has a positive impact on wellbeing at a larger scale, in creating conditions for us all to thrive at a community scale.
