Planning Permission for Millfield Library and Day Houses 

We are thrilled to have received planning consent for two projects at Millfield School in Somerset. We have been working with the school since early 2019 to enhance Library and Day house facilities within the school.

The library project aims to enhance the north west corner of the campus and deliver a building that connects to the external landscape at Millfield. The original building designed by Jeremy and Caroline Gould is a fine modern building showing distinct Scandinavian influences. Our intervention opens-up the southern side of the building and is driven by a need to improve social learning space on the campus. The vision for the project is to transform the library into a vibrant study centre, providing exemplary teaching and learning spaces and signalling its importance within the campus.

The main body of the existing library will be retained and refurbished with a two-storey extension on the south east corner giving a new entrance, social study area and 6th form centre. The form and character of the extension is designed to harmonise with the existing building, while adding further clarity and enclosure to the external spaces.

The new Day House building will be located between the Gareth Edwards Rugby pitch and all-weather Hockey Pitch and will replace the existing timber-clad buildings along Somerton Road. The two-storey building will provide communal social and study space for each of the day houses with shared areas providing space for houses to socialise together. The ground floor will house new changing facilities for the day houses and provide additional facilities for the sports pitches at weekends.

The external landscape has been designed as a south-facing garden that will increase the bio-diversity of the site, with spaces to relax, socialise or watch matches on the neighbouring pitches.

The buildings are designed to reduce their environmental impact by using a well-insulated and air-tight building envelope, maximising daylighting, air source heat pumps to heat the spaces, natural ventilation and photo-voltaic panels to supplement energy demand.

Like many of us, the school is currently operating remotely and has had a hugely positive response to its online learning programme. We look forward to recommencing work with them as soon as a return to normal campus life is possible.
