Radio nan Gàidheal

To mark its 80th anniversary, team member Catriona Macdonald was delighted to discuss the 1938 Empire Exhibition with Catriona Murray for Radio nan Gàidheal.

Transforming Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park, notable Scottish architects of the time asked the population to leave the smog, grime and normality of city life at the gates, and dream of what could be in the future. Modernist, white and pastel buildings glistened, fountains cascaded down wide boulevards, and Tait Tower soared skyward. Innovation, engineering and manufacturing were brought to the fore: a spectacle for recreation and enjoyment.

The programme delves into this significant demonstration of production, progress and power, all staged under the shadow of the Depression, the beginning of the Second World War and the crumbling of the Empire.
