William Leiper Exhibition

William Leiper Exhibition

“As part of the Festival of Architecture 2016 the Leiper Gallery is hosting an exhibition celebrating the life and work of William Leiper. PagePark are very pleased to have supported this initiative conceived by gallery owner Ewan Kennedy.

In the exhibition Leiper’s story is used to explore some aspects of life in late Victorian Glasgow, such as how the arrival of electricity transformed the face of the city with street lighting, tramcars and the “Jolly red Giants” commercial towers built of steel frames and concrete with lifts behind highly decorated Gothic exteriors.

During a long and varied career William Leiper’s portfolio included Templeton’s Factory, Dowanhill Church, many private house commissions, and Dumbarton Academy, which is currently being transformed by Keppie Design into new council offices.

The Leiper Gallery is exhibiting a spectacular model of Tsar Alexander’s eccentric steam yacht Livadia, built on the Clyde in 1880, for which Leiper designed a fantastic interior. James Pierce, a talented young model maker has created this as his own unique contribution to the Festival.

The exhibition runs from the centenary of his death on 27 May until 18 September.

Further information about the exhibition is available here.
