We are delighted to have two of our recently completed projects shortlisted for RIAS Awards 2016 namely the Saunders Centre at The Glasgow Academy and the recently opened Westwater building for Languages at Dollar Academy. By a curious coincidence our nomination for two of the RIAS awards this year is for two school buildings by Project Architects Sarah Jane Storrie and Marianne Keating. Both buildings were designed and detailed in tandem and share ideas about how a simple plan in each instance has been extruded into an architectural promenade.
The Glasgow Academy and Dollar Academy teaching buildings are an arrangement of teaching spaces where the circulation is envisaged as part of the teaching and learning setting. The enclosure of teaching spaces is challenged through the incorporation of glass screens that transforms the use of the building into an open, yet acoustically and environmentally distinct experience.
Whilst each building is different in feel, the construction exploits the difference between these circulation elements and inner rooms, the street edge Glasgow Academy as a sequence of connected bays above a common foyer and at Dollar Academy as a contemporary take on the historical loggia overlooking the new embryonic sports quad.
We are thrilled to be nominated, with the RIAS winning schemes going on to be eligible for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award and the RIBA Stirling Prize.
