The RICS awards celebrate inspirational initiatives in the land, property and construction sectors. At this years RICS Scotland Awards 2013 the Scottish National Portrait Gallery received the coveted Scotland Project of the Year Award.
"We were unanimous in selecting this project as a winner because it created a modern inspiring gallery through the restoration of a 120 year old building. The building redesign provided a quite radical new gallery with distinctly modern interventions. Public space has been increased by 60% and the circulation and accessibility has been improved in a manner that is both sympathetic and dynamic. Original fabric used where possible, including the relocated panelled library that looks as though it has always been in the new position. Altogether it is a very inspiring project." SNPG was also winner in the Building Conservation category and will join the other category winners to represent Scotland in the global RICS Awards final which will take place in London in October.
