Project Info

A welcoming new entrance porch of shop, café, display and education space under a stepped oak frame and copper clad criss-cross roof, piggy backs on the side of the existing out-building of the Chapel precincts.

Following an options appraisal which ranged from considering virtual access, facilities located in the nearby village and then some 200 metres from the Chapel, the decision was made to provide enhanced visitor reception facilities alongside the existing Category A listed building already in use for reception, ticketing, toilets, café and shop and Trust offices. That building is part of the Chapel precincts and had previously been converted to facilitate what at the time were very modest annual visitor numbers as well as a small exhibition. The fact that the exhibition was at an upper level with no lift access and that all the other facilities were coming under extreme pressure, it was considered appropriate to extend the existing building northwards.

The existing traditional stone building was adapted to accommodate a range of support facilities and staff accommodations while the new build element was designed as an open and ‘transparent’ linked addition with a number of underlying principles to ensure its appropriateness to this very sensitive location.
