A townscape study was followed by a project to convert the former Covernaters Inn in Newmilns to flats. Subsequently an amenity housing project was developed on the adjacent car park site, for Hanover Housing Association.
The housing sought to replicate the character of the small town ‘close’, grouping individual two-storey blocks around a new access road and court. The houses were placed on site to create a series of external spaces, with selected glimpses to the town beyond.
The simple contemporary forms echoed the existing pitched slate roofs with clipped eaves over white rendered walls. Careful placement of windows enabled the close-knit placement of blocks by avoiding overlooking whilst maximising views and internal security.
