RIAS Awards 2024

It’s a real privilege to see our project North Gate among the 17 nominees for this year’s RIAS Awards. Tamsie Thomson, Chief Executive of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, said ‘The 2024 shortlist is undoubtedly one of the strongest for many years.’
We are delighted to be part of the shortlist and look forward to welcoming the judges to visit the project soon.
North Gate develops a longstanding vacant brownfield site and provides a new city landmark that completes the Gorbals masterplan. It contains 31 units, comprising of 1 and 2 bed flats for 100% social rent and is designed to suit the needs of primarily older residents. Conceived as a series of towers, the building splays out to maximise the potential compact site area, efficiently planned to achieve 5 flats per floor from the 1st floor up. This ensures all flats are either duel or triple aspect, providing great natural light internally and considerable views across the city.
Simon Metcalf of New Gorbals Housing Association notes: ‘The Crown Street Regeneration Project was set up in the early 1990s to regenerate a 40-acre site in the heart of Glasgow’s Gorbals area. The North Gate site was the final piece of the puzzle. Our brief for North Gate therefore invited the architect to create a gateway building and beacon to its surroundings, befitting its prominent location. This brief might be summarised as ‘set a crown on Crown Street’. The challenge was to achieve this while creating socially uplifting flats that become life-enhancing homes for our tenants and remaining in sight of the budgets imposed by the social housing grant funding regime.’
Congratulations to all of the nominees, showcasing the breadth and quality of architecture in Scotland. The full press release can be found HERE
