As work progresses on site, we’re excited to share the reveal of the North Elevation to Bristo Square, with the removal of the first section of scaffolding. The sensitive fabric repair works have included stone repairs, slate and lead repairs, as well as the restoration of leaded and timber windows.

A highlight of this phase is the meticulous refurbishment of the leaded and stained glass windows, carried out by Rainbow Glass Studio. Part of the process included a visit to their workshop showcasing the care and detailed craftsmanship involved.

The next phase of works to the main elevation is the installation of a new accessible ramp. This upgrade will provide step-free access for the first time in the building’s history, making it more inclusive for all students and building users.

The ramp’s new layout has also led to a change in the boundary wall along Bristo Square. The updated design for the ramp and boundary wall incorporates new cast iron railings that respect the original rhythm and geometry of the old railings, while also introducing design elements that reflect Teviot’s identity, such as the thistle and the curves of the Turret Stairs.

A visit to Ballantine Casting, who are fabricating the new railings gave us the opportunity to view the whole process of creating the railings and see the very first panel that had been made. The process of fabrication would have been very similar to how the existing railings had been manufactured over 120 years ago.

We’re privileged to be part of the journey of Teviot’s transformation, preserving its iconic Victorian character while adapting it to meet the needs of 21st-century students.
