Laurieston Arches Planning Consent

The railway viaduct that runs through the Gorbals divides the communities of Laurieston and Hutchesontown. We’ve been working with New Gorbals Housing Association to open up a pedestrian and cyclist focused route through the viaduct to connect these communities. Our proposals have recently been granted planning consent and involve the insertion of a new walkway though Arch 12. The new route is lined with curved corten profiles that were inspired by the historical, temporary propping of the railway arches during the construction of the viaduct. These profiles extend beyond the entrances of the arch to announce the route on either side. Artist Rachel Duckhouse has inspired our design development, with the forms, patterns and textures of the existing setting playing an important role in the evolution of the project. Supported by the Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, we’re looking forward to commencing works on site in the near future.

This project is the first phase of a broader vision to stitch the communities and seeks to act as a catalyst for further improvements to the site. We’re pleased to be collaborating with Stantec, Raeburn Farquhar Bowen, G3 Engineers and Armour Construction Consultants.
