Following the site-wide masterplan we completed in 2022 for the Museum and North Lanarkshire Council, we are now helping to develop the Summerlee: New Stories, New Audiences, Better Lives project further, supported by Harley Haddow, Cundall and NBM. The significance of the Museum is tremendous, both culturally and historically—not only for Coatbridge and Lanarkshire, but for Scotland as a whole. The Museum shares the story of Scottish industrial life and, critically, the impact of deindustrialisation on local communities.

This project will look into substantially expanding the Museum’s scope and focus, with a new emphasis on social history, covering the period up to the closure of Ravenscraig in the early 1990s—an era that is currently underrepresented in its collections and exhibitions.

Some of the key initiatives will include:

– The expansion of the much-loved miners’ village alongside the development of a welfare community hall,

– The establishment of new creative spaces including galleries and learning facilities, and

– The development of an expanded learning landscape with interactive site interpretation to enhance engagement with the Museum’s natural surroundings

We’re thrilled to bring this project to life!
